New Tyne Crossing: twin tunnels by Bouygues Travaux Publics

As part of a concession project, Bouygues Travaux Publics is in charge of the design, building and operating of the New Tyne Crossing in Newcastle, UK, a vast project including the:

• design and build of a new tunnel under the River Tyne;

• renovation of the existing tunnel;

• financing and operation of both tunnels for 30 years.

The new tunnel will be 1,600 metres long, including 360 metres under the River Tyne, alongside the existing tunnel. The part under the river will be made up of six 90 metre prefabricated caissons. The work will take until December 2011. This is the Group’s first major public works project in the UK.
