Bouygues Travaux Publics on the right track

Within the scope of a PFI contract, Bouygues Travaux Publics is carrying out civil engineering on South Africa’s Gautrain Rapid Link. Replicating France’s Regional Express Network (RER), this line will link Johannesburg, Pretoria and the international airport and the company will operate it for 15 years until 2026. The line will help lighten road traffic between Johannesburg and Pretoria, reducing travel time between the two cities to 40 minutes. The international airport will be within less than a quarter of an hour’s reach of the capital.
Totalling 80 km of railway lines, the project comprises 15 km of tunnels, 11 km of bridges and 10 stations (including 3 underground). In addition, there will be a train maintenance depot, an operations centre and 11,000 parking spaces around the stations to encourage use of the new rail link. All construction work is designed to protect the environment, including transplanting of trees, reduction of noise and dust etc. Delivery is scheduled for 2010.
