Designing projects
Sustainable construction accounts for 21% of the Group’s R&D budget, ranking it first among topics in the Group’s research spending. Current research projects cover such themes as a sustainable construction index for housing, positive energy homes, commitments on the energy consumption of future buildings, etc.
Through several of its subsidiaries, Bouygues Construction has developed expertise in the HEQ (High Environmental Quality) process. Since 2003, subsidiary Elan has offered HEQ services and technical support to customers and construction companies. In 2006, Bouygues Construction entities designed and built 21 structures complying with HEQ standards.
Construction sites
The second aspect of our commitment is ensuring that the environment is protected during all our construction operations. More and more of our projects applied “blue plans” (or the equivalent) in 2006, intended to make employees aware of the need to take account of the QSE dimension throughout the project life cycle, both in France (800 in our building operations) and in other countries.
At Bouygues Entreprises France-Europe, sites which enforce these principles can be granted an internal “Chantier Bleu” label, which recognises the efforts that have been made with regard to energy saving, waste management and relations with the neighbouring community. 128 projects were awarded this label in 2006.

A selection of exemplary practices:
- The development of environmentally-friendly site equipment continued: retention basins for form oils were brought into widespread use (130 are now in use), an on-site water-flow regulation system was introduced, and a solar-powered water heater was specially developed for site huts.
- Exprimm (facilities management) worked on acquiring a range of biodegradable green products to replace traditional chemical products.
- DTP Terrassement organised systematic training for its site vehicle drivers in eco-driving techniques, with the aim of cutting its fuel consumption (currently 40 million litres per year). Exprimm put a similar programme into practice, and passed on the savings achieved to its employees in the form of profit-sharing.
- On the construction site of the A41 Annecy-Geneva motorway, a number of information and consultation initiatives have been employed, including meetings with environmental groups and residents associations, site visits for the general public, a highly informative website and a toll-free telephone number.
- Most of the Group’s subsidiaries use handbooks, environment kits and specific training programmes to make their employees aware of all the small actions they can perform on jobsites to help protect the environment. The same philosophy is applied in the Group’s offices, especially with regard to the consumption of paper and electricity.
