Work supervisor

Voice-over: Claire in her office and then visiting a building site.

Claire: My name’s Claire Cartalas and I’m a works supervisor. My job is to run the site. I spent two years at a preparatory school and then went to ESTP, an engineering school, where I got to know the building and civil works sector.

Voice-over: Claire – Works supervisor

Claire: What’s so good about this work is that there’s no such thing as a typical day. On this site, I spend some time in the office holding meetings with the architect, the client or the subcontractors. There are also office meetings to bring the site manager up to date; we discuss site progress, where we’re at, if there are any slips or any particular problems to resolve. After that, we inspect the site, check up on everything, see if there’s any poor workmanship, what problems there are and sort them out with the workers.

Voice-over: Claire visiting the site.

Claire: It’s really interesting mixing with all these very different people working together. We’re all here for the same reason and there’s often a good atmosphere. We like being together and making progress. That’s the best part of the job. I very quickly realised that it was a job that suited me perfectly.

Claire: There’s one particular trait you need as a works supervisor, and that’s a bit of character.

Here at Bouygues, we have a structure. You feel backed up, there are managers ready to help if things get tough. If there are disputes with the client, there are people that join us during the meetings to help resolve them. It’s nice to know that if we have questions to ask the architect or each other, if we have any doubts, then there’s someone from Bouygues ready to help. That’s really useful.
