Bouygues Travaux Publics and Bina Istra, a Bouygues Construction subsidiary, have completed the construction of the Istria motorway in north-western Croatia. The work on this strategic infrastructure, intended to relieve the isolation of this region, one of the wealthiest in the country, took place over several phases and provided for the doubling up of certain sections should the traffic level exceed 10,000 vehicles a day. The project included the construction of a one kilometre long two-lane double girder viaduct crossing marshland. The humidity level required the use of an innovative technique to prevent rusting: anodes placed in the centre of the piers are linked to cathodes placed at the base of each pier, providing a 60 amp supply that positively compensates for any risk of deterioration. The motorway will be operated for a 32 year period.
