  • Financed by the Ivory Coast government, the Henri Konan Bédié Bridge in Abidjan is one of the largest infrastructure projects in West Africa. The concessionary company Socoprim, in which our subsidiary Bouygues Travaux Publics is the majority shareholder, is responsible for designing and building the 6.7 kilometre stretch of highway that incorporates the bridge, and operating it for a period of 30 years. The purpose of the infrastructure is to link the residential district of Riviera and the popular Marcory district, across the Ébrié Lagoon.

    “An enormous difference”

The Henri Konan Bédié bridge will make an enormous difference to my daily journeys. I will be less stressed before leaving for a professional appointment or to go shopping. And it will be a bonus for the Ivory Coast economy. If you can get to all the more remote parts of the city in free-flowing traffic, you’re a lot more efficient and you can make use of the time you save to do other things.

Édith Y. Brou, Vice President, Ivory Coast Bloggers Association (ABCI)

  • In compliance with the very strict standards stipulated by the World Bank, the construction site of the Henri Konan Bédié Bridge was managed with social and environmental issues as a priority. Controls of pollution and air and water quality were incorporated in the project.

  • The project is more than a bridge; it is also 6.7 kilometres of highway, a 21-gate toll plaza… and an interchange incorporating 16 decks on 3 levels. This remarkable interchange, worthy of a large American city, is being constructed directly above one of the main highways into Abidjan! This was a fine demonstration of the technical expertise of VSL, which was responsible for the post-tensioning and pre-casting of the decks.

The Henri-Konan-Bédié BridgeA technical challenge

The boring and concreting operations for the piers of the Henri Konan Bédié Bridge in the lagoon were particularly delicate, but the project teams successfully overcame the enormous challenge of ensuring a continuous supply of concrete by sea. In February 2014, after roughly a year’s work, the 62 piers – 2 metres in diameter and 85 metres deep – could be positioned. Then the 60 concrete caissons constituting the deck on the bridge, having been precast on land, were carried into position by barge. The teams achieved an extraordinary technical feat in positioning these 1,000-tonne, 50 metre-long elements, buried deep in the lagoon, with millimetre accuracy.

The Henri-Konan-Bédié BridgeContributing to local economic development

The inhabitants of Abidjan have suffered from a shortage of transport facilities, but this bridge will result in a considerable improvement to traffic. As well as opening up access to the neighbouring hinterland, the infrastructure will facilitate the transportation of freight to the port. The construction project attached great importance to its environment, and also to people. When the works began in 2011, following 15 years of civil wars, the company’s management teams decided to invest heavily in training local employees in a bid to offset the penury of skills in civil engineering. Appropriate steps have been taken: training in the use of equipment and on safety and quality standards, on-site training, weekly toolbox talks on safety and on the environment, etc. Their newly acquired skills will prove useful to the site workers in seeking new employment when the project is completed.
