For the past few months, our site workers haven’t been the only ones working on the L2 project. Graffiti artists have been expressing their creativity on freshly dried concrete, painting large frescoes on the structures of the future bypass. Art is being created behind the walls for the benefit of all in Marseille.
Currently under construction, the L2 Marseille bypass will link the northern and eastern motorways through a 9.7 km connection between the Arnavaux (A7) and Florian (A50) interchanges. The bypass will offer an efficient alternative to going through the city centre and will increase travel between the city’s different neighbourhoods and suburbs. It will also form part of the urban fabric and the development projects currently underway.
An innovative artistic project
In partnership with the Planète Emergences association, La Société de la Rocade L2, who is behind the project, invited artists to express themselves on the massive, open-air walls. The graffiti is a break from the grey motorway and opens it up to the neighbourhoods it passes through, inspired by local history, geography, architecture, and the social and urban environment. It is a major urban art project that should be seen and enjoyed, one that strengthens the link between people and spaces.
At each interchange there will be a large-scale mural that tells a story, demonstrating the graffiti artists’ talent, and the diversity of perspectives and techniques. Drivers will be able to discover a wide range of symbols during car journeys.
In order to respect safety requirements for drivers, the tagged walls are on slip roads, and the artistic stance favours large works featuring giant designs, avoiding small details.
A citizen-focused project creating links
The Murs de la L2 project is at the heart of the city. Artists have been involved in each step of the project, in partnership with educational establishments and community centres through workshops and collaborative programmes.
The first sections, which began in 2015, will be revealed this summer, when the eastern section of the project will be opened to traffic. Artists will then be involved until 2017 to give life and colour to the northern part of the bypass.
