One year after laying the first stone, the major structural works of Bordeaux Métropole Arena is already completed. The works and technical teams deployed all their ingenuity to arrive at this result. Let’s put a spotlight on this iconic project for greater Bordeaux and for Bouygues Bâtiment Centre Sud-Ouest.
Why have a Bordeaux Métropole Arena?
Bordeaux, voted “the most fashionable destination in the world for 2017”, is not yet equipped with facilities worthy of this name to accommodate music or sporting events.
Following the concession call-for-tender initiated by the city, the team made up of Rudy Ricciotti (the architect), Bouygues Bâtiment Centre Sud-Ouest (the representative of the design/build consortium) and Lagardère Live Entertainment (the operator) have dreamed up a functional and adaptable amphitheatre-style arena, all in white concrete, which will have remarkable acoustics.
Bordeaux Métropole Arena will accommodate 2,500 to 11,300 spectators for around 100 events per year and with approximately twenty possible configurations.
A high quality major structural works completed in 10 months
One of the initial challenges was, in just ten months, to create the white concrete pebble resting on a glass pedestal on the banks of the Garonne. The façade will be evenly perforated with illuminated openings, looking like a digital equaliser.
This building full of curves makes you think of a simple shape – however, this does not mean that it is simple to build. The Siteworkers poured this novel shape, which incorporates a double curve with sloping sides, on site. The ubiquitous white concrete will retain a rough finish and be visible to all, which will involve a high level of quality and absolute rigour on a day-to-day basis throughout the manufacturing cycle; the use of digital modelling has proved to be a decisive factor.
The construction site is now entering a key stage since the end of April, with the fitting of the roof structure formed specifically by two gigantic beams. The most impressive of these will be 82 metres long and 6 metres high. It will be assembled on the ground in three sections which will be lifted into place using a 700-tonne crane. Its little sister measures 55 metres and will be made up of two sections.

It namely gives a few indications on the consequences of artificial intelligence development on the construction sector. At Bouygues Construction, are we ready?
How to be attractive, create value and be scalable is the challenge for office buildings in order to meet all the complexity of an increasingly pressurised market. The uses and structure of such buildings require urgent rethinking in order to meet the new expectations of their occupants, as well as health and environmental issues. Solutions exist, but such changes must be anticipated in order to be implemented effectively.
