Iqaluit Airport: a gateway for the Arctic.

The Iqaluit Airport, located in Nunavut in the far north of Canada, is a strategic hub for civil and military aviation serving a vast territory as large as Western Europe. Delivered under a 34-year public-private partnership by Bouygues Bâtiment International, the project encompasses the financing, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a new international airport terminal.

To increase airport capacity and resilience, the works included a new 10,000 m² terminal, a 4,500 m² services building, and the rehabilitation and extension of approximately 400,000 m² of runways and parking areas. As the only year-round transport link for Nunavut’s 25 communities - none of which are connected by road - the airport plays an essential role in regional connectivity and supply.

Sustainable design for northern resilience.

Aiming to minimise environmental impact in the sensitive Arctic region, the airport extension project pursued LEED certification - the first building in Nunavut to achieve this standard. An environmental action plan was implemented, focusing on sustainable construction practices and resource efficiency, ensuring the new facilities meet rigorous green building benchmarks.

The airport’s upgraded infrastructure supports increased capacity for both passenger and cargo transport, vital for civil and military operations. The project sets a new standard for sustainability and performance in northern infrastructure, ensuring reliable air access for communities across Nunavut all year round.
