A safe decommissioning in the North Sea

Two end-of-life gas platforms were decommissioned off the coast of the United Kingdom using an innovative method. Petrodec and Overdick designed a system that allowed the entire structure to be slid onto a self-elevating barge and then brought ashore for recycling. This approach limits the resources required, reduces the use of ships and allows operations to be carried out all year round, even in difficult weather conditions.

VSL was responsible for moving the structures. The teams installed sliding beams adapted to offshore conditions, as well as jacks to precisely position the platforms before their transfer. A remote control system monitored pressure, movement and height in real time, ensuring safety at every stage.

Redundancy devices were integrated to avoid any interruptions related to supply conditions at sea. After the offshore operations, VSL also carried out the final sliding of the platforms to their onshore dismantling area.

The project simplified the processing of small platforms and reduced the environmental impact of dismantling.
