Bouygues Construction continues the modernisation of Yopougon University Hospital, one of Ivory Coast's largest medical facilities

Launch of the second phase of an extensive refurbishment programme 

This refurbishment project aims to bring one of the leading hospitals in western Abidjan up to the highest possible medical standards through a complete reorganisation of the hospital and its technical facilities. The initial phase of refurbishment, carried out in 2023 by SETAO, the historical subsidiary of Bouygues Construction in Ivory Coast, has already seen the renovation of the hospital’s critical facilities, such as operating theatres, the A&E department, the intensive care unit and some of the patient wards.  

Phase 2, which was launched in July 2026, will complete the restructuring and refurbishment of the hospital, including new operating theatres, a pharmacy, laboratories and consulting rooms. The kitchens and all the remaining inpatient wards will also undergo refurbishment. 

No interruption to patient care 

Work on this second phase will proceed while the site remains in operation, which requires a strict separation of construction and clinical activities, as well as constant vigilance with regard to both safety and the availability of critical equipment. The project is on a tight 21-month schedule, with early handover planned for the priority facilities: medical imaging and inpatient rooms. Once completed, the hospital will have 509 beds and its surgical facilities will be expanded from six to 12 operating theatres. In addition to the equipment installed during Phase 1, it will also be equipped with an MRI scanner, two CT scanners and 12 ultrasound scanners. 

A long tradition of healthcare expertise in Ivory Coast  

Bouygues Construction, which was involved in building the Yopougon University Hospital (opened in 1990), is now carrying out the refurbishment and modernisation of this facility, eagerly awaited by healthcare professionals and the two million residents of one of the country’s most populated municipalities. This renewed trust highlights the Group's expertise across the entire lifecycle of hospital infrastructure (design, construction and refurbishment) and consolidates its position as a global leader in the healthcare sector.

Bouygues Construction is currently building the Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health in London, and has also just been selected, through its subsidiary Bouygues UK, to build the new Overdale hospital in Jersey (in the Channel Islands).
