A world-class cruise gateway for Hong Kong

The Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, built by Bouygues Bâtiment International’s subsidiary Dragages Hong Kong, on the former runway of Hong Kong airport, is one of the world’s most advanced cruise facilities. Opened in 2013, the terminal stands as a symbol of Hong Kong’s ambition to serve as a leading regional hub for large cruise ships.

Designed by Foster + Partners, Kai Tak features three column-free decks, an architectural feat enabled by 42-metre spans. This flexibility allows the facility to accommodate two 360-metre super-liners simultaneously, with capacity for up to 4,000 passengers and 2,000 crew per ship, and the ability to process up to 3,000 passengers per hour. Spaces can be easily reconfigured for events, exhibitions, and performances, maximising utility year-round.

The 56-metre-wide waiting zone, filled with natural light from triangular windows, enhances passenger experience and offers further options for event hosting.

Sustainable innovation and strategic impact

Kai Tak Cruise Terminal sets the benchmark for environmental responsibility and versatility. Designed to minimise energy consumption, the facility utilises rainwater and condensation recovery systems for cooling and irrigation. Natural light penetration was optimised throughout, reducing electricity demand.

With a total of 4 hectares of green roof - the largest in Hong Kong - and a 23,000 m² public garden, Kai Tak is also a showcase for urban biodiversity. The building integrates 132 photovoltaic panels to generate renewable energy on site.

Strategically positioned, the terminal supports Hong Kong’s role as a gateway to South-East Asia and Australia, leveraging the city’s potential for luxury cruise tourism.
