Turkmenbashy mosque

Bouygues Turkmen, a subsidiary of Bouygues Bâtiment International, delivered the Turkmenbashy mosque in Kipchak, an exceptional place of worship and the largest mosque in Central Asia.

Covering 36,000 square meters and surrounded by 36 hectares of landscaped gardens, the mosque can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers. Located in Kipchak, near Ashgabat, at the foot of the Kopet-Dag mountain range, the building emerges from the landscape at the bend of a dune, creating a powerful visual and symbolic presence.

Architecturally, the mosque combines Ottoman influences with traditional Turkmen geometric patterns. Four minarets surround a monumental golden dome, forming a landmark visible from afar and anchoring the site within Turkmenistan’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The construction of the Turkmensbashy mosque represented a significant technical challenge. Built on a former swamp and located in a seismic zone classified 7 on the Richter scale, the project required advanced engineering solutions to ensure long-term stability and safety.

Completed in just three years, the project mobilised the full range of Bouygues Turkmen’s technical expertise, demonstrating the subsidiary’s ability to deliver complex structures in demanding geological and environmental conditions.

Beyond the construction work itself, the project also reflects a strong commitment to developing local expertise. Bouygues Turkmen established its own workshops in Turkmenistan, covering concrete production, carpentry, painting, metalwork, and electromechanics - and trained local workers over several years. As a result, more than 400 Turkmen craftsmen have been trained, contributing to long‑term knowledge transfer and strengthening local capabilities.
