Since November 2015 more than 100 site workers from Bouygues Energies & Services have been working to build a next-generation thermal power plant in Gibraltar. The aim of the project is to replace three fossil fuel power plants dating from over 30 years ago, which no longer meet European requirements.
The biggest challenge in the project was undoubtedly transporting six 250-tonne engines and six 65-tonne alternators by sea, taking into account strict logistics and optimum weather conditions.
The big day came on 5 December 2016. One year after works began, the cargo was shipped from Finland on boats fitted with 400-tonne cranes. The engines were then loaded at Saint-Nazaire for shipping to the port in Gibraltar.
The engines were unloaded in one day and brought from the port to their final location in the power plant using special machinery.
