Bouygues Construction delivers Amazon’s new 160,000 m² distribution centre near Lyon, France

Bouygues Construction’s subsidiary, Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie, has completed a vast distribution centre for Amazon, located in Colombier-Saugnieu, very close to Lyon-Saint-Exupéry International Airport.

Its completion was carried out in 20 months, within the framework of a group bringing together different Bouygues group companies: Bouygues Construction, Colas (Perrier), Equans France (entities: Ineo, Axima) and the architect Archi-Factory.

With a total surface area of 160,000 m², the complex is remarkable for its size: 359 metres long, 154 metres wide and 19 metres tall.

Guillaume Allais, Regional Director for Southeast France at Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie, said: “We have built a platform for Amazon that showcases Bouygues Bâtiment Industrie’s ability to manage large-scale operations in the logistics sector. The success of this project is founded on meticulous organisation and close coordination between all parties involved.”

Designed to meet the demands of state-of-the-art logistics, the facility is organised on three different levels. The ground floor houses the goods reception and sorting areas, the packing areas and the reception and dispatch docks, while the two upper storeys are dedicated to storage, order picking, and movement of autonomous mobile units integrated into the logistics process.

The structure is based on a prestressed concrete frame featuring columns, beams and hollow-core slabs. The east and south facades incorporate Danpatherm® K12 translucent insulated interlocking polycarbonate cladding panels, selected to meet the specific constraints associated with the site’s proximity to Lyon Airport, while the north and west elevations are finished with rockwool sandwich panels. Particular attention was given to the installation of high-precision floor slabs, especially on the upper levels, ensuring the degree of flatness required for the autonomous mobile units to function seamlessly.

The project called for a number of specific technical and organisational solutions to be implemented. Seven phased early-access handovers enabled Amazon to set up the process install its equipment in parallel with the progress of the construction work. Over a six-month period, up to 600 Amazon personnel were present onsite alongside the construction teams on site, in close coordination.
