Ensuring long-term Coastal protection

The Nouvelle Route du Littoral Viaduct connects Saint-Denis to La Grande Chaloupe. Designed to keep vehicles away from the risk of cliff collapses and to withstand cyclonic swells, this offshore viaduct runs along the coastline for 5.4 kilometers between the north and west of Réunion Island.

Running parallel to the coast, this bridge consists of seven successive spans, each 769 meters long. An exceptional structure due to its characteristics and maritime location, it is also remarkable for the diversity of tools and methods used in its construction.

Marine engineering for mobility

All deck components were prefabricated onshore at two prefabrication plants and then installed by sea or via a launch barge.

Zourite, a custom-built mega-barge, was outfitted for coastal navigation in rough seas. Equipped with two overhead cranes and a concrete plant, it deployed a team of seasoned sailors to transport and install at sea the components of the 48 piers that now make up France’s longest offshore viaduct.

The six piers installed on either side of Pointe du Gouffre are equipped with eco-design modules that serve as nurseries for the development of underwater flora and fauna.
