Strengthening Al Jimi Mall for its new IKEA expansion
Al Jimi Mall in Al Ain underwent a major expansion to accommodate a new IKEA store, which introduced significant additional loads onto the existing structure—particularly the ground-floor slab. Ensuring the building’s safety and overall structural performance under these new conditions was essential.
VSL was first appointed to assess the existing post-tensioned slab and propose a strengthening solution. By optimising the design, VSL delivered a cost-effective alternative to conventional reinforcement methods, reducing disruption to mall operations and enabling the project to stay on schedule. This successful approach led to VSL being selected to execute the works.
The works ensured the long-term stability and safety of the building, supporting the successful integration of the new IKEA store and reinforcing Al Jimi Mall’s position as a major retail destination in Al Ain.
