Preserving the spirit of Mont Saint-Michel
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mont Saint-Michel would not be the monument we know today without its bay. It was the evolution of this bay that almost changed the character of this unique place forever. Due to the tides and human intervention, such as the construction of the causeway and car park, silting has gained ground and threatened the maritime character of the Mont and its bay, posing certain risks to the ecosystems that inhabit it.

Construction of a new dam on the Couesnon
Major works were undertaken in the 2000s to restore the quasi-natural order with the construction of a new dam on the Couesnon and downstream hydraulic developments necessary for its proper functioning. Measuring 138 metres in length, the mouth of the dam is equipped with nine reinforced concrete piers supporting eight metal sector gates, allowing the rising tide to enter the Couesnon riverbed and then releasing this volume of water at low tide in order to flush out the sediment accumulated in the bay and thus prevent the proliferation of eelgrass.
