Pre-stressed concrete floats for a deep-sea wind farm

Off the coast of Bergen, the Tampen Hywind project has enabled several oil platforms to be supplied with renewable electricity thanks to an 88 MW floating wind farm. The aim is to reduce the use of gas turbines and associated emissions by up to 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

The project is based on 11 SPAR-type concrete floats, adapted to great depths and extreme conditions. Aker Solutions entrusted VSL with the prestressing of the floating structures. The teams prefabricated 660 prestressing cables, tested in real conditions, before installing them in the floats at a height of up to 85 metres.

The operations were carried out from the top of the structures, without external access, using a single-stage injection process. This process optimises the durability of the floats while limiting maintenance.

This project contributes to the development of floating wind power in deep-water areas, where winds are more consistent.
