Creating a modern campus within a live hospital environment
Bouygues UK, Bouygues Bâtiment International's UK subsidiary, delivered a transformative upgrade to North Middlesex University Hospital, creating a modern healthcare campus whilst maintaining continuous operations within the existing facility. The scheme comprised a significant 33,000 m² new-build hospital and substantial refurbishment of two existing buildings, linked by atrium bridges to form a highly integrated clinical environment.
Construction within an operational hospital demanded comprehensive environmental and logistical measures maintaining full infrastructure availability including access roads and car parking. The Methods and Engineering department developed detailed phasing drawings for each construction stage, mitigating risk and minimising disruption.
The project delivered five new in-patient wards providing 150 additional beds, eight state-of-the-art operating theatres, a state-of-the-art diagnostics centre, spacious outpatient facilities, and an Accident & Emergency department that was the largest in North London at the time of completion.
