Modernization and adaptation to European standards

The Fréjus railway tunnel, or Mont-Cenis tunnel, is located on a strategic route for European trade, connecting Dijon to Turin via Modane. To ensure the development of passenger (Paris-Milan) and freight transit, Réseau Ferré de France entrusted Bouygues Travaux Publics with the modernization and European standardization of the 7-kilometer French section of the tunnel.

This major maintenance operation on a 14-kilometer tunnel under rail traffic involved lowering the tunnel level and re-centering the tracks. The creation of safety niches enabled the testing of a new technique, Demolition by Expansive Foam (DMX), which avoids the use of explosives.

Une machine d'excavation rotative avec des ouvriers en sécurité travaille au premier plan, des débris rocheux s'accumulant, tandis qu'un train bleu et blanc passe rapidement et en partie flou sur la gauche dans un tunnel sombre.
