A landmark solar farm for regional Australia

Neoen and Bouygues Construction Australia have partnered to build one of New South Wales' largest solar farms at Culcairn. Spanning 1,000 hectares near the town of Culcairn, approximately 45 kilometres north of Albury, this 440 MWp project represents a major step forward in Australia's renewable energy transition.

The solar farm will generate sufficient electricity to power 155,000 to 160,000 homes—more than double the number of households in the Riverina region. By connecting to the existing on-site 330kV TransGrid transmission line, the project maximizes energy delivery during peak demand periods.

Beyond energy generation, the Culcairn Solar Farm exemplifies sustainable development through agrivoltaics, integrating agricultural grazing with solar production. Sheep graze beneath the solar panels, helping to manage vegetation while providing landowners with additional income streams - a win-win approach tested and proven across Neoen's Australian portfolio.

Innovation, logistics and environmental stewardship

The Culcairn Solar Farm showcases cutting-edge renewable energy technology and construction excellence. The project employs:

  • Rotating bifacial solar panels that track the sun throughout the day, maximizing electricity generation efficiency
  • Digital twin technology to optimize logistics and site management across an area equivalent to 1,200 football fields
  • Premium-quality components from leading manufacturers, with 20-25 year warranties on panels and inverters

Construction commenced in December 2023, with peak workforce activity during 2024-2025. The project was handed over to Neoen in May 2026.

Environmental commitment runs deep throughout the project. Neoen has planted thousands of trees and established protected areas for Australian wildlife, including consultation with Traditional Owners - the Wiradijuri people - through a dedicated Cultural Heritage Management Plan. The farm will displace 648,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and eliminate the equivalent of 18,135 cars from the road.
