Modernizing Cyprus airports under a landmark 25-year concession

As part of a 25-year concession contract, Bouygues Bâtiment International was awarded the design and construction of the Larnaka and Pafos airports in 2006, including the modernisation of the existing terminals at each site, as well as their operation and maintenance.

Bouygues Bâtiment International, profoundly transformed Cyprus’s main gateways—Larnaka and Pafos Airports—by designing, building, financing, maintaining, and operating new, state-of-the-art terminals. Larnaka, with a 93,000 square meters terminal, now handles 10.3 million passengers annually. Pafos, featuring an 18,000 square meters terminal, focuses on tourism and low-cost carriers like Ryanair.

Executed in collaboration with Egis, Aéroports de Nice, and Vancouver Airports, the €612 million project delivered seamless passenger experience and commercial enhancements. Notably, the airports remained fully operational during construction (Larnaka finished in 2009, Pafos in 2008). The new facilities tripled airline presence, increased destinations to 120, and boosted passenger traffic by over 60%, strengthening Hermes Airports Ltd’s market position.

Setting global standards for sustainable airport infrastructures

Sustainability took center stage in the project: innovative cold storage for energy efficiency, solar-powered electricity, extensive tree relocation and reuse, wastewater recycling for irrigation, and on-site concrete recycling all contributed to significant environmental gains—CO₂ savings akin to four hectares of forest and water savings equating to the annual use of 333 people. Both airports achieved green certifications and won awards, underscoring the project's commitment to both operational excellence and sustainable development.

This landmark project demonstrates how integrated design, operational continuity, and eco-friendly practices can elevate airport infrastructure and passenger experience on a global stage.
