Two tunnels built under the Airport Express line

As part of the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport, two tunnels were built under the Airport Express railway line, which remained in service throughout the construction period. These tunnels are designed to accommodate the new automated people mover (APM) system and high-speed baggage handling system (BHS).

To limit the impact on the railway line, the box jacking method was chosen. VSL-INTRAFOR carried out all the work, including soil improvement, installation of a protective vault, construction of a thrust slab and progressive sliding of two reinforced concrete structures.

The work took place on a restricted site, less than 10 metres below the railway line and in close proximity to the sea. A settlement compensation campaign ensured that the line remained safe. The sliding operations were controlled in real time by a centralised system combining thrust jacks and traction jacks.

The project, carried out between 2018 and 2022, is contributing to the expansion of the airport to accommodate up to 30 million additional passengers per year.
