Two underground shafts for Sydney's future metro line
To support Sydney's westward expansion, the New South Wales government is developing a new metro line with tunnels and underground stations. Two diaphragm walls, necessary for excavation and future stations, were entrusted to the VSL Australia – Keller consortium.
The diaphragm walls were designed for a 120-year service life and optimised thanks to constructability studies carried out by VSL. The work involved the excavation of deep panels in a dense urban environment, with careful management of geotechnical interfaces and groundwater.
Optimisations were incorporated during the studies, particularly in terms of reinforcement dimensioning, excavation sequence and tolerance management, in order to reduce risks during the execution phase and improve productivity on site.
VSL implemented real-time digital monitoring using the TIO application, enabling control of excavation progress, panel verticality, slurry consumption and concreting parameters. This continuous supervision improved work rates and ensured compliance with the project's quality requirements.
The site is located in the heart of the business district, in a dense and constrained environment. The teams worked continuously, with adjusted logistics and specific noise reduction measures.
The project also incorporates low-carbon solutions: lighter cage assembly, halving transport, and concrete formulation that reduces the proportion of cement.
