Bruges 2: A climate-resilient neighbourhood
Spanning 4 hectares, extending from the historic centre of Dijon and the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin (CIGV), the former Faubourg de l'Île is reconnecting with its historical roots. Water is once again becoming a defining and structuring element of the new neighbourhood through the redevelopment of the banks of the River Ouche, the restoration of one of its tributaries to the open air, and the creation of a rain garden.
The ‘Bruges 2’ project builds resilience to climate challenges at the neighbourhood level. Led by the property developer and operator Linkcity, in close partnership with the City and the Dijon Metropolitan Area, the project is part of an innovative approach that focuses on:
- Flood risk management
- A contribution to the metropolitan area’s food resilience project
- An R&D approach to combating the urban heat island effect
- Housing for everyone and all budgets
- Reducing the carbon footprint by renovating existing housing rather than demolishing and rebuilding it
- Well-designed soft mobility solutions
- Extensive use of renewable energy
These are the planning priorities for this new eco-neighbourhood, which challenge conventional urban design practices whilst demonstrating that, in the face of these new challenges, the city knows how to adapt and bounce back to remain an attractive place to live.
Brick, used throughout the project, gives the new neighbourhood a strong identity. The public spaces, facing the water, and the restoration of natural areas on this former brownfield site, offer the people of Dijon a calm, serene and characterful place.
