Plan Group, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, recently developed a comprehensive solution for the building, management and clinical systems of Humber River Hospital, North America's first digital hospital. Take a look at what has been done to improve this hospital's systems!

Installing interoperability

Humber River Hospital's in-house teams have been working with Plan Group since 2010 on building a model digital hospital. As North America’s first fully digital hospital, the new Humber River Hospital has adopted smart digital technology systems that provide the right information in the right place and at the right time, with the aim of enhancing patient experience.

One of the main features is the introduction of integrated bedside terminals with touch screens, giving the patients personal control over their environment (light, ambient temperature). The patient can also use video call for real-time, direct communication with the hospital's medical staff or with family and friends.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) or “robots” are also used to streamline the hospital's delivery of medication, food services and housekeeping. The advantage of these autonomous machines is that they can communicate with the hospital scheduling environment, elevators and other electronic systems enabling them to move around wirelessly. The AGVs also interact with clinical staff to let them know when the requested services have been delivered.

Both patients and staff benefit from the hospital’s real-time locating service which involves the safety and wellbeing of the patients and hospital staff. It focuses on asset tracking, patient wandering, infant abduction and staff duress.

With equipment like this, plus the streamlining of procedures and workflow management it makes patients more autonomous. The goal of interoperability has been achieved and the challenge presented to Plan Group has proved to be a great success!
