Bouygues Construction has built and is operating the country’s first toll motorway. In the long term, “Highway 2000” will link Kingston to Mandeville, which lies 80 km to the west of the Jamaican capital. The first section of this 2 x 2 lane motorway has all the latest safety equipment and an innovative toll barrier system that uses a laser to pre-detect the type of vehicle. The motorway is operated by Jamaican Infrastructure Operator Ltd, a company jointly owned by Bouygues Travaux Publics and Autoroutes du Sud de la France, through a 35 year concession contract. New sections have been added since 2000 and some carry up to 37,000 vehicles a day.
