Advanced Engineering for Hong Kong’s Cross Bay Link

The Cross Bay Link is a 1.8-kilometre dual two-lane highway that creates a new connection between Tseung Kwan O and neighbouring districts. At the heart of the project is a one-kilometre marine viaduct designed to ease congestion and support the area’s long-term development.

VSL joined the project from the tender stage and later delivered all key post-tensioning works, a technique that strengthens the bridge and extends its service life. The teams installed and stressed both external and internal tendons, each protected by an individual high-grade sheath to enhance durability and facilitate inspections. The internal tendons were additionally fitted with smart sensors that monitor their condition over time, ensuring long-term safety and performance throughout the structure’s life cycle.

VSL also provided the specialised equipment needed to lift, position and secure the main arch bridge, its two side spans and 18 massive precast segments, each weighing up to 2,500 tonnes. To protect the hanger cables, the project used its patented dry-air circulation system—a first in Hong Kong—which keeps moisture away from the steel and helps prevent corrosion over time.
