A crucial role in building India’s longest sea bridge
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), officially named Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbor Link, is a 21.8-kilometre access-controlled six-lane bridge designed to ease congestion in Mumbai and improve connectivity with the growing satellite city of Navi Mumbai. The crossing was inaugurated in January 2024, becoming India’s longest sea bridge and reducing travel time between the two cities from almost two hours to just 20 minutes.
As a long-standing specialist partner in major Indian infrastructure projects, VSL India was entrusted by the Daewoo – Tata Projects joint venture to play a central role in the construction of the main elevated viaduct. VSL designed and supplied three launching gantries and seventeen casting cells, and executed the erection of a 7.8-kilometre precast segmental viaduct formed by 208 spans.
A major milestone of the project was the relocation of two fully assembled launching gantries directly over the water, allowing them to resume span erection immediately. Using its BRAVO heavy-lifting technology on barge-mounted towers, VSL carried out this move without any dismantling or reassembly—a feat believed to be a world first and one that required exceptional precision throughout the operation.
VSL also implemented measures to reduce carbon emissions on site, including the use of energy-efficient LED lighting, on-site accommodation to limit transport and a transition to digital processes.
